Torbay Council Trading Standards are responsible for enforcing the law in relation to age restricted products. Whether it is alcohol, tobacco, knives, fireworks, lottery tickets or solvents, businesses have a legal obligation to ensure that they are only supplied to customers who are old enough to buy them.
To that end we work together with the police and licensing officers in advising businesses on how they can best avoid illegal sales. The key to staying on the right side of the law is staff training and in giving them the confidence to refuse sales if they suspect a customer is underage. SWERCOTS have developed an educational 16 minutes film which can be accessed by clicking on the No Proof No Sale page on the left.
It is a mandatory requirement to have in place a Premises Age Verification Policy. This document can be used to fulfill this requirement. It must be read by all staff and signed and dated accordingly.
