No doubt you want the best for your children. To achieve this we must pass on a healthy environment to them. Reusable nappies have many benefits:
- for parents (cost)
- for babies (comfort)
- for the environment (less waste)
Modern reusable nappies are shaped and fit like disposables and there is a wide selection of nappies available made from natural fibres which are more comfortable next to a baby’s skin.

Getting Started
You could start your collection off with a few reusable nappies and a soft, breathable cover. Supplement these with your usual disposables and as you save money, put that aside to increase your reusable nappy collection. Within a few weeks you won’t have to buy another disposable.
It is never too late to start to use reusable nappies. Using just a few reusable nappies will save you money and cut down on waste, a great way to pass on a healthy environment to your child.
In Torbay we are offering Real Nappy Trial Kits, enabling parents to try a range of modern day re-useable nappies. The kit contains a range of options including shaped nappies, flat nappies, pocket nappies, birth to potty nappies as well as waterproof wraps and accessories, with different brands represented. Most of the nappies in the trial packs are made from organic cotton and bamboo fabric.
During the 4 week trial you will have access to a Real Nappy Advisor who can help nurture you through any problems and answer any questions you may have. Each kit comes with flushable disposable liners, a fresh set of fabric liners, as well as accessories including sanitiser, reusable wipes, a full set of washing/care instructions and guidance documents. At the end of the trial you will receive a voucher for 20% off real nappies ordered through the Real Nappy Advisor up to the value of £300.
The nappy trial kits are free, but require a deposit of £50 cheque or £20 cash which is refunded on return of the kit.
The aim of the trial packs is to provide information and raise awareness of real nappies - modern versions are really very impressive. It gives you the chance to make an informed choice and also find out which real nappies are best for you and your baby before you stock up.
As an alternative to disposables the benefits of real nappies are 3 fold:
- Cost to parent (can easily save £500 per baby from birth to potty)
- Comfort for Baby (many parents feel that washable nappies made from natural fabrics are best for their baby)
- Environmental - 28 million disposable nappies go into landfill in Devon every year - taking hundreds of years to breakdown and producing methane in the process, a very considerable contributor to climate change. Disposables are also of course derived from paper, so cost a great deal of trees as well.
Residents will need to register their interest for the free trail on the Recycle Devon website.
