What should I do if I have a complaint about my child’s school?
Most issues can be resolved by talking through the problems with a teacher, senior teacher or the Headteacher. If you are unable to resolve the problem informally it may be necessary to make a formal complaint.
All schools are required to have a complaints policy. You should ask your child's school for a copy of their policy so that you know exactly how they will deal with such matters and who you should contact. This will normally involve raising your concerns with the Headteacher followed by a complaint to the school governors if you remain unhappy.
What can I do if I am not happy with the school’s and governing body’s responses?
If you have been unable to resolve your complaint and you think your school is acting 'unreasonably' you canwrite to the Secretary of State for Education. Complaints to the Secretary of State are handled by the government’s Department for Education (DfE).
Your letter should include the steps you have already taken to resolve the problem. The DfE will not usually be able to investigate your complaint if your child no longer goes to the school where the incident took place. You can write to the Secretary of State for Education at:
