Where to find information about the benefits that are available

Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)

The DWP manages national social security benefits for people with long-term health and disabling conditions, including carers. Services are delivered through local and national offices. Each agency has its own charter - available on request.

Serves people aged over 60. Manages the Minimum Income Guarantee (Pension Tax Credits from Oct 2003) and state retirement pension. Serves anyone aged 55 and over. However it is mainly aimed at older people who are disadvantaged for any reason e.g. lack of confidence, mild dementia, confusion or physical frailty. Many have little or no contact with others. The aim is to empower them to live independent lives; to support them in their decision-making.
We will only work with people who wish to have the support of an advocate. Advocates will not make decisions for older people, provide counselling, offer long term befriending, or provide legal or financial advice, but will signpost people to someone who can help.

Jobcentre Plus

First Contact Centre: 0845 602 1036 (for first time claims only).
Serves people of working age. Manages Jobseeker's Allowance, Income Support and Incapacity Benefit. Also processes first time claims for Carers Allowance.

Disability and Carers Service

Manages claims for Attendance Allowance (AA), Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Carers Allowance (CA). For enquiries about existing AA/DLA claims, telephone: 0845 712 3456. For enquiries about existing CA claims telephone: (01253) 856123.
