How to pay your Council Tax


Direct Debit

Direct Debit is easy and the most cost effective way to pay your council tax.

What are the benefits of Direct Debit?

Please note that direct debits cannot be made from certain types of account, for example, savings account. Please check with your bank if you are unsure.
You can choose to pay on the 1st, 15th, or 25th of the month and can set up a direct debit by phone or completing the direct debit mandate above.
To set up a direct debit over the phone, please telephone 01803 207201 with your council tax account number and your bank details.
A letter and bill will be sent confirming that it has been set up and when your first payment will be collected. The letter includes a copy of the direct debit guarantee scheme for your records.
Please note: a signed direct debit mandate is always needed if you need more than one signatory to release funds from your bank account. Completed mandates should be returned Torbay Council, Revenue & Benefits, Town Hall Torquay TQ1 3DR

Online- Debit or Credit Card

With the online payments service you can pay your council bills with any of the following types of credit/debit cards - Visa, Mastercard, Solo, Visa Delta, Visa Electron and Maestro.
If you are in a public place we strongly advise you make sure you are not overlooked as you enter your details to prevent them being misused by somebody else.

You can use the 24 hour automated telephone payment service which accepts all cards except American Express and Diners Cards.
You can pay in person at our Connection offices, or by telephone during office hours.
Please have your council tax account number plus credit or debit card ready when you call and follow the instructions carefully. Have a pen to hand to make a note of the receipt number that you will be given at the end of the call.
Please note: A charge of 2% is payable on credit card payments made against Council Tax accounts. This charge does not apply to Debit Cards

Post Office

You can pay your Council Tax at your local Post Office. There is no additional transaction fee for this service and payment can be made by cash, cheque or debit card. Take your bill with you to the Post Office as the barcode on it is used to process the payment. Cheques should be made payable to 'Post Office Ltd'. Please allow five working days for the Council to receive payment.

Payzone

You can pay your Council Tax at your local shop that displays a Pay Zone sign. Payment can be made by cash and in some cases debit and credit cards at these locations. Take your bill with you to the Pay Zone shop as the barcode on it is used to process the payment.

Internet, telephone banking or standing order

If you would like to set up a Standing Order or your bank allows you to access your bank account by phone or internet, the details you will need are;
You will also need to quote your Council Tax Account Reference.

Cheque

By posting in the post box at any of the 3 Connections offices in the Bay, or by sending your cheque and Council Tax account details to Torbay Council, Town Hall Castle Circus, Torquay, TQ1 3DR.  Cheques should be made payable to Torbay Council.
Post dated cheques are not accepted. The Council will not be held responsible for any financial loss incurred by you, arising from early presentation of such cheques.
Please note: if you have made a payment and require a written receipt,you need to send a stamped, addressed envelope.

Cash

You can make cash payments at any Post Office or Payzone by taking your bar-coded bill with you.
Please note: Cash payments cannot be made at the Council's offices.
