Local Democracy Week is the focal point of the Local Democracy Campaign which is about getting young people, Councils and other groups to work together to change their community for the better, provide leadership, ideas and examples of best practice.
The Local Democracy Campaign is attempting to give young people a better understanding of how local democracy works and what their role in the local community is. This can be achieved by learning about how the local council works and having an opportunity to meet local councillors.
Torbay Council’s aim for Local Democracy Week is to:
- Encourage young people to voice their opinions on issues that matter most to them.
- Raise the profile of local democracy and the role of the Mayor and Councillors.
- Encourage more Councillors to get involved in youth participation and to support the young people of the area.
- Raise awareness on elections and how to vote.
