The National Food Hygiene Rating System

The national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) aims to provide consumers with information on the hygiene standards found by Environmental Health Officers when they carry out their routine food hygiene inspections. The scheme is designed to give consumers a choice about where they eat out or shop for food and at the same time encourage businesses to improve their food hygiene standards.
The scheme is based on six tiers of different ratings which reflect the range of standards that may be found. At the bottom of the scale is 0 which means that urgent improvement is required, at the top of the scale is 5 which means hygiene standards are very good.
Window stickers and certificates will be given to businesses and their rating will be displayed on the food hygiene rating scheme section of the Food Standards Agency website.
The scheme is likely to be introduced in a staged approach with certain categories of businesses being launched first, such as takeaways, restaurants and cafes.
The food business operator of the food establishment has a right of reply following the rating awarded at the inspection.
The scores are available on the Food Standards Agency opens in a new window website.
