Environmental Health Officers in the Food Safety Team at Torbay Council have a variety of options available to ensure that food businesses comply with the law. We are also able to prosecute food business operators for serious breaches of food safety legislation.
Where minor problems are found at a food business, a list of work needed is given to the business so that they can comply with the law. If we believe the work will not be carried out or we find serious matters, Hygiene Improvement Notices may be served. Hygiene Improvement Notices require the work to be carried out in a set time, otherwise a prosecution may follow
If an imminent risk to public health is found at a premises, i.e. a pest infestation, filthy conditions or a lack of hot water for cleaning, a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice may be served to stop the premises being used for a food business until the imminent risk conditions are removed.
