Devon Games to Inspire - Torbay Team Trials 2012

The cheers of a thousand sporty young people will ring out at this year's Devon Games to Inspire 2012, formerly known as the Devon Youth Games, taking place in Okehampton on Saturday 30 June 2012. The Games promote community youth sport and create multiple new sport development opportunities. Sports this year include Triathlon (swim/run/cycle), Athletics, Badminton, Girls Cricket, Gymnastics, Mini Soccer, Girls Hockey, Boys Hockey, Girls Netball, Girls Tag Rugby, Basketball, Tennis, Dance, Volleyball, Street Sports (BMX/Skateboard/Scooter) and Table Tennis.
The Devon Youth Games have taken place every year since 1999, and attracted more than 2500 trialists who compete for places.
The Games are open to young people aged 8 - 16 from the ten participating local authorities in Devon (Exeter, Plymouth, Mid Devon, South Hams, Teignbridge, Torridge, Torbay and West Devon, North Devon and East Devon). They will take place in Okehampton, West Devon.
Kirsty Parker-Calland, Torbay Community Sports Co-ordinator says "It's all about giving young people the opportunity to compete in a mass participation event, and to find out how much fun it is. A lot of young people come back year on year because they enjoy it so much. Unless we are providing opportunities for young people to do sport, a lot of them won’t do it, because there are so many other things that they can do".
"The Games provide a lot of development opportunities, from putting on trials to selecting competitors and taking part, it allows us to offer sports that might not be available, perhaps creating enough excitement and on-going interest to form a new junior club".
The Devon Games to Inspire promote 'Sport for All' and offer opportunities regardless of ability - the Games are for everyone. "The ones that never get included, who will never be the best, often get left behind in a school environment, at the Games, they can have a good time and get some extra coaching. We also encourage them to join clubs. On the day, it’s like a mini-Olympics; there is a fabulous atmosphere, with face paints and balloons".
Trials and training for the Torbay teams get underway over the next few weeks and Torbay Council are urging all youngsters across the Bay to come along and try out for an event.
